August Challenge #2. Color: Husk. Pattern: #14 Sixteen Squares
Element options:
For this challenge I have used handwritten journaling.
I also added an element of hand stitching with floss for the effect of hand quilting.
The August feature paper now on sale at www.snapncrop.com is Husk. It is a very textured paper that adds a very rustic look and feel.
Can you see the texture in this shot? Isn't it a nice look and a nice color?
Pattern #14
This pattern so reminds me of one of the things that first drew me to Mosaic Moments grid papers...it reminds me of one of my other hobbies..quilting. So after studying this pattern for some time, and searching my quilting books I pulled this pattern for inspiration.
This Sawtooth pattern is similar to one of many 'Star' Patterns, even though I was thinking of the Ohio Star when I began, this is what I have adapted for my pages this week.
The stitching is made easier by using a piercing stylus to puncture holes and six-strands of embroidery floss flow easier and doesn't get caught up on the adhesive. A needle or pin would work just fine too.
I know that there are tools out there that would have accomplished this very even and neatly, but truth be told, my quilt stitches ARE uneven and very 'primitive' in style. Living on the edge of Ohio's Amish Community has not improved my stitches! And then there is the fact that those tools cost money...I tend to follow "The MacGyver School" to use what you have available.
A tool that I thought would be worth the investment was the Marvy Punch that is available from www.snapncrop.com, because you can frame the shot you want to crop and it is perfect for the 2x2 block space. At the moment, I'm having a few issues with mine. SO....
I began with printing my photos 2 to a 4x6 photo paper, then used the handy Mosaic Moments Quick Glance Guide (TM) to determine the best look.
After trimming and then using the guide to frame the photo desired, it was cut it out with an Exacto knife on a Mosaic Moments Mat.
Printing this photo at 3x4 allowed more of the inside framing of the bridge to show for the pattern size in the layout. This compares the two views of the two sizes.
I really wanted that loooooong look at the guitarist practicing...the acoustics were terrific!
Page 1 The Cuyahoga Valley National Park
Portions of this park includes sections of what was the Ohio and Erie Canals..it also includes trails, a museum or two, bike trails, picnic areas, covered bridges and waterfalls. Being the closest National Park to us...we had to go explore...these pages follow that day that the kids and I explored what was almost in our own back yard! That section of the log showing all the cuts of lumber they could get out of it....still amazes me!

And the waterfalls are gorgeous! Everyone was in search of the best photo. The Park Trail begins in Independence, Ohio and ends in Akron. It was a full day, ending with Cold Stone Ice Cream!
The photos used on the 2.125" green tiles (that fit the pattern) were cut to 2" square to give a small color edge frame. The photos were halved and both sides used to keep the right tones forming the star points.
Well, another month of challenges has flown by. If the Design Team has inspired you to try some new techniques, a bold new color or to even begin...how about sharing the results with us...we'd love to see what you are doing.
Thanks for stopping by...
