MMDT Challenge #15: Garden

I guess you could say it took me by surprise. Or, more likely, it was something I never paid attention to before. But when I finally realized it, I knew I had to scrapbook it.

I know it sounds silly, but I never noticed how much a plant's leaves protect its fruit before.

The window over my desk in my studio looks directly onto the garden. This year, I planted plenty of colorful plants ... purple peppers, red peppers, yellow squash, red tomatoes, eggplant ... expecting to see the wonderful colors from my window.

Instead of all of these wonderful colors, I was treated to a garden of green, since all of the vegetables are hidden under the leaves.

I wanted to show the excitement of getting down on the ground or moving the leaves aside and finding the bright, beautiful colors of produce I planted. Here is what I came up with.

I created a panoramic of the corn, since that sits in the back of the garden and watches over everything. It amazes me how much the actual corn blends in with the leaves -- hidden from predators.

On the left side, I showed how green the garden looks -- even the squash blossoms are hidden underneath the foliage. Then, I also included the eggplant and the stems of the beets so you could see what is hiding underneath.

On the right side, I included a photo of the chickens in the garden ... their short stature allows them to see the produce all of the time ... and the journaling about what you find if you look down below the leaves.

Across the middle of the page, I included little glimpses into what you might see if you look below the leaves.

I hope you enjoyed this peek into my garden as much as I enjoyed taking the photos for it.

Great job, Candy! LOVE the corn panoramic! I didn't grow my own garden this year, so living vicariously through yours was a great treat! I adore that little girl in your patterned paper, and it always makes me smile to see your chickens! It is amazing how much those leaves hide...one month a few summers ago, I went out to my garden to pick a "few" peppers for the farmers market in my town. I didn't think I had more than a dozen out there. I ended up taking 90 bell peppers to the market!! Wonderful job!!

Candy, great veggie photos! Never thought much about the hidden veggies. Thanks for letting us know. I'm glad to see the chicken again! The panoramic corn was genius :)

Very nice! I had to cheer "LOL" because that is exactly what I did when I saw the chicken photo! What would a "Candy layout" be without a chicken photo!? The other photos are great too...a really different perspective on the garden! I agree with the others...the patterned paper, the buttons, the 1" shots with such WONDERFUL variety all really add to the the overall welcoming quality of this layout! :) Great job!

This is a very nice layout Candy, so much detail. I love the 1" square peeks into the garden and all of the colors really "pop" out of all of that green!!! Great job!

I saw this system at CKC in Louisville 2012. I bought all of it! Didn't know there was a design team. Knowing I could do beautiful things like this is so inspiring! And just everyday things take on a different beauty! Thank you so much!!

Thanks so much for your thoughtful submission. It reminds me of my grandparents garden and the simple pleasures that bring so much satisfaction. Truly nature's bounty.

Everything in "Down Below" says 'down home' or as Tami said, 'down on the farm,' to me. From the quilt squares and vintage print paper to the buttons and ric-rac in the denim and burlap title...a very farm friendly feel. You've successfully shown us how we need to take a closer look at things that are around us, to truly enjoy all that it has to offer!I love the curly Q vine tendrils and the deep veins showing in the underside view of the leaves!! Great details!

I love the "down on the farm" feel to this page, Candy. I love the use of denim, and buttons, and the girl... Corn was a nice way to go for the panoramic. I can relate to that excitement of seaching through the leaves to find that hidden "fruit". My garden is not as grand as your is; but, I really enjoy what I have. Thanks for sharing yours. :)
