MMDT#10 – My Favorite Color: Teal

The Photos I Took: While driving to one of the local mall on Mother’s Day, I told my husband about this project. We started looking for my color on the way to Iron Man 3 which was part of our MD celebration with our oldest and youngest child (ages 35 and 30). Much to my surprise, I found few examples of my absolute favorite color: teal. Early on I was ready to give it up for green since finding my color seemed to be like hunting for a piercing tool in a haystack. After the movie, my daughter invited us to her horse show in Gettysburg, PA three days later. I quickly rearranged my schedule and elected to make the three-hour drive up north. Her horse was scheduled to show at 8:30 AM, so we had to leave by 5 to get there in time to see her. Our second day near Gettysburg, I started taking pictures . . . in the rain . . . Our first hint of teal came in the form of signage on a building and later on framing at a strip mall. We even saw a car with a teal finish, even though it looks bluer in the photos. I grabbed a few more photos when we got back to Delaware and resorted to online downloads for the remainder of my layout. I managed to photograph my finished page before the battery in my camera breathed its last. It’s recharging now.

Finally, I finished my teal image journey on the Internet. In my research, I learned that teal is the signature color for Ovarian Cancer awareness and Sexual Abuse/Assault Awareness. I downloaded images from their websites to demonstrate the commercial nature of the color and how it is used to educate, encourage and motivate. Besides, I like the sentiments behind “fight like a girl” and “Mad chick.” Since I didn’t run across any ducks along my journey, I downloaded this gorgeous picture of a teal and nature’s use of this deep, rich hue.

Choosing My Color This is best reflected in my journaling: Why teal? There’s just something about that color that screams, “You’re mine!” I must have fallen in love with teal the first sight because it keeps popping up in my art. It’s a hybrid color that comes from mixing green with blue on a white base. The result is more than aqua but less than pine. In nature, there is a duck species named teal. Since the only waterfowl I managed to see in my travels were Canadian geese, I downloaded an online image of a teal. I did find some blooming foliage near Gettysburg that took on a hint of teal. From there, I had to turn to sign makers for more examples. Then, of course, there’s art as represented in an abstract painting and in the colors selected for Cancer and Sexual Abuse Awareness. Teal catches our attention and gives us hope and encouragement. How do I feel when I see teal? I feel hopeful and encouraged. 5/21/03

My Process

I started by airbrushing a page of white MM cardstock with Copic BG18 Teal Blue. This was for practice as much as anything else. I wasn’t looking for a smooth application. I wanted a more “artsy” feel to the project. I trimmed and placed my photos and inked the edges with Memento Ink’s “Teal Zeal.” I placed them on the page, trying to group them somewhat by topic or like items. Of course, size and shape was an important factor as well.

All in all, I must admit that Tami has given each of us a good start for those “All About Me” projects we keep putting off.

Teal has been one of those trending colors recently, it seems to be a favorite for many applications. Nice to see the "how I did it" section included on the airbrush technique you used. Gives an airy, free flowing feel to the page.

I have tried adjusting the color of the grid paper like you did, but then I find it really hard to see the grid lines. You did a great job. I too like the jewel tones. I am a great fan of inking the edges also. This looks great.

Beautiful layout - and one of my favorite colors is teal too! I'm drawn to jewel colors - magenta, burgundy, teal...

Thank you for shaing the page process image. I always find it helpful to see the "how" behind a page. I am a big fan of teal (and aqua) too.
