THE SIXTIES

 MMDT #8 Photo Challenge inspired by Pop Culture from the decade you were born. I found it hard to pick just one thing to do a layout on. So the first page is about the early sixties and page two is about the later sixties. I was born in 1961 the youngest of six. It was hard to not blur the sixties into the seventies. I remember much more from the late sixties and seventies. My biggest block with this assignment was pictures - not enough.  I had to search Goodwill and antiques stores to photo what I didn't have and wanted to show. 

Some of the moments I remember most was going places with my oldest sister. She would take me to Famous Barr downtown St. Louis. We would eat at Walgreens in Hampton Village. Ben Franklin had the best candy selection. Spent a lot of time at Forest Park 1966-68. There were free concerts (Janis Joplin was one) at the World's Fair Pavilion.  We would sit in the grass and listen to music. I would make clover chains, paint rocks with finger nail polish from her purse or just run around.  If it was hot we would wade in the fountain. Please note that if today my children waded in the fountain I would be mortified! The photo at the top is how the World's Fair Pavilion looks today.  In the winter most of our family would sleigh ride at Art Hill. Art Hill is a big hill in front of the St. Louis Art Museum. If you don't stop in time you'll wind up in the lake at the bottom of the hill. 

In 1968 my oldest sister Nan took me to Florida.  So, if I was seven she would have been twenty one...what was my mother thinking?  I remember going to the beach everyday. A soldier took us to the boardwalk and we played games and ate seafood.  I remember a hippie named Erik he had a psychedelic cane.  I have no pictures from that trip.  My sister sent them to a girlfriend in Florida and she did not send them back.

In grade school girls wore dresses or skirts, knee high socks and shorts underneath for gym class. The bus picked me up at my house until I was in sixth grade.  Our entire 2nd grade class watch the moon landing in a crowded room around a black and white tv with a very fuzzy picture. At the time had little appreciation for what I was observing. 

I played with Barbies, Troll Dolls, hula hoops, stuffed animals and played records, 45's on my own hand me down record player.  We would play outside all day and come home for dinner. Fond memories of tomato and mayo sandwiches and playing in the creek catching crawdads. My mom was a pitcher, so I do not have much, if anything from that era. Wish I still had that large dollhouse with the velvet upholstery. I'll cut my thoughts off with that...could go on for days! Hope you enjoy : )

 The photo below is of my great aunt Julia. This is the only photo I have of her. She remained single and had no children. I was named after her.

 The photo below is Bill, Joy and me in Florida. Note the stylish glasses and tennis shoes.

 The photo below was taken with our first Polaroid instamatic camera. Notice it is a color photo - just not much color.  I was a Cardinal fan way back then : )

Below is page two done in color to show progress.  It is a collage of what the later sixties meant to me.

Guess I should have dusted those dusty flowers? The record is actually a 78 rpm childs record. Photo taken at an antique shop two Saturday's ago.

The below picture is a toy "whizzer" reproduction. I don't have any of the originals. My sister would knit wraps in varigated colors for them so when they would spin it would look cool.

Below was my favorite toy. I made clothes for them by cutting scraps of Mom's material. I would cut arm holes and sew a snap at the back neck - no sewing involved.  I bought these as a young adult.  Actually have a large collection in a box in my Mom's basement.

Does anyone remember these? I cannot imagine putting records in one of these, but I did.
