2012 MMDT June Challenge #2 Color:Granite

The Challenge for June required using our featured Granite 12x12 Grid paper, now on sale, MMpattern #23 and our choice of one or more of these elements:

  • Patterned paper
  • Brads
  • Buttons
  • Mosaic Moments Free Download

For this Challenge I am using patterned paper from the Doodlebug Design Inc.'s Boys Only Collection (the lined paper is the reverse side of the paperclip patterned paper)  and brads that happened to match, sort of, from my stash. Also, I have used a sheet of adhesive cork from Canvas Home Basics, and metal letters...I've had so long, I'm not sure who made them (sorry!). And special LEGO shaped brads, that I used for the photos of him and his creations.  At the top of the pages I've used a charcoal gray ribbed cardstock.

Brads in blue, orange and lime, french knots in aqua

June's Challenge #1 had me presenting the serious side of my youngest son, Andrew. I had many things assembled that started me thinking of more than one approach to that assignment. As I did, I thought I would just continue on in this challenge with a different look, this time at the things that he enjoys and identifying his lighter side...the "fun guy", or as he says...Isabella's "fun Uncle".

Here's the list I've included with a few editorial comments to explain:

  • witty (this guy is quick with a quip, a great sense of humor! keeps us entertained.)
  • creative (whether is is the ever increasing LEGO collection or re-creating a "blanket" of bacon he saw on the internet)
  • dramatic (loves Shakespeare...can handily quote the bard for every occasion, retells stories with finesse and flair!)
  • musical (took up piano this year, just bought a didgeridoo, loves the Piano Guys and Straight No Chaser)
  • a reader (not in the 'sit down with a book type', but 'the audio-book and work type' has to be doing two things at once)
  • The Fun Uncle (the one that can entertain his niece and play)

What I've created here was a little unorthodox for the Mosaic Moments Grid pattern #23. When I looked at the pattern, I saw a lot of space that could become a message board to show off some of the things Andrew enjoys and a perfect way to use a sheet of adhesive cork I purchased recently. I photocopied cartoons, tickets and programs and miniaturized them to attach with brads (and the occasional french knot of aqua floss to secure others. The downfall of the cork is that things do not attach too well. I tried a few things and finally got them to stick with glue dots, but the brads and floss really helped! I had paperclips that matched in my office supplies, so thought I'd attach a few photos that way too.

This is a peek at the things he enjoys presented in a way that he might if he had a board to post on. The haphazard look is a a bit out of my comfort zone (my cork board is very organized, a bit OCD, I'll admit)...so I have had to rely on the examples that the girls have in their room.

Paper Clips (just happens to match the Doodlebug paper) close-up of the Bacon Blanket.

The second page I decided to eliminate the area for the list and just make it the full width of board.

This will hopefully be a page in his scrapbook that will give him a glimpse back at things in his life, when he's old enough to have forgotten the things that filled his life when he was a kid.

Thanks so much for stopping by...

Andrea - very neat page! It shows how special Andrew is and how well you know his personality. He surely will get a kick out of it.

How do you manage to come up with something unique every time--I wasn't even that creative when I was young! I especially like how you opened up the second page. This will be copied by me for my grandchildren as they progress into teenagedom. Thanks for the ideas!

I absolutely love the concept of a corkboard! The arrangement looks just like you have a bulletin board on your wall!

Going out of your comfort zone paid off! Another very creative interpertation of our challenge! What a great way to capture a teen or young adult in a scrapbook page. I love all the things you used...from the cork board and lined paper to the brads and paper clips! This one may just be repeated at some time in my collection!! Andrea, you are an endless source of inspiration:)

The cork board theme is wonderful--you really captured how most cork boards look. I like your use of paper clips and the lego brads. This page was definately a fun tribute to son.

I Love the cork board look and how you carried it into the second page - works perfectly! Love the lined paper on the list. And the brads and paper clips are perfect embellishments for this page spread. For those who don't have lined paper our Free printable downloads (on snapncrop.com) could be a good alternative.
