The Offal Truth
The January Challenge #2…to be inspired by Dr. Seuss. Choose a Dr. Seuss story and let it inspire the photos you take/use. Let the story inspire some of the following: Page Title, Journaling, Fonts used on your page, Colors used. Design Requirements: Use 1” photo or paper squares as a design element/embellishment. Include the name of the book that you chose for inspiration.
I chose Green Eggs and Ham.
My title block is an orange background, white lettering with black shadows, imitating both the cover and the font style. Famous lines repeated throughout the story make up the focus on the top half of the page. The strongest colors associated with the story is the orange cover and green ham, so both of those Paper Tile colors were used along with a lighter shade of green…actually Med. Lime tiles…fairly close if not the same as Apple Crush, and also White tiles to create a wide open feeling with the white Mosaic Moments 12 x 12 grid background. The phrase from the story “I will not eat them…” was printed in Times New Roman font on photo paper for a glossy look. Teletype font was used for journal blocks below the photos and Doodletype font cut with the Cricut machine was used for the Title Block for a close approximation. I began with Tami’s page pattern #46 and adjusted the pattern to suit the photos I was using.
As children we ate most things without complaint, but I have to say there were a few things that I could not abide. Black Pudding and Tripe, without a doubt top the list with tripe being the worst. Coming home from school and smelling it cooking was always the beginning of a miserable night. For this layout I chose an artsy photo because I couldn't handle a photo of an actual serving. Another ‘delicacy’ often spoken of reverently, but beyond our means, was Haggis. Thank goodness. I’m sure you've heard what is in this traditional Scottish meal (if not, Google it)…hence the title and the spelling…it isn't wrong, (this time!) just descriptive. The first time I had Haggis was on the last trip home to Scotland in 2010 when my cousin insisted I try it…in order to get a deep fried Mars bar that I was infinitely more interested in trying. The Haggis is pictured here being served with tatties and neeps (or mashed potatoes and turnips.) It wasn't as bad as I had expected, but not in my top ten foods to be sure.
My Mum would often say…”your Granddad always said…waste not, want not…” when we’d be sitting in front of a meal that was not to our liking. I suppose that could be why my ancestors once ate these foods; however I couldn't imagine why it meant that WE should still be eating them! Yes this challenge turned out to be a bit difficult. Just thinking of these foods can make me gag. Really.
It seemed appropriate to use this Dr. Seuss story. My youngest brother loved this book...why I don’t know, because he was…is…the pickiest eater ever! Anyway, this book became a favorite of my children also…especially when trying to coax them into trying something new…at least once. For me having tried Haggis once and having far more than my share of black pudding and tripe, I think I’m entitled to declare “I will not eat them anywhere!”
